Privacy
OmarOS collects nothing by default. This page lists everything the system and this site contact, and how to turn each off.
This website
- No analytics, no tracking pixels, and no third-party scripts or fonts: everything loads from omaros.org.
- No cookies. The site remembers your language and theme in your browser's own storage, which never leaves your device.
- The server keeps no access logs for the public site or the log service, so it doesn't record IP addresses.
- Downloads come from iso.omaros.org, on the same OmarOS server as this site and kept to the same rules: no access logs.
What the OS contacts by itself
OmarOS has no telemetry: no usage statistics, crash reports or install counters. These features go online on their own, which reveals your IP address to the server they contact:
| Feature | Contacts | What it reveals | How to turn it off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weather in the top bar | wttr.in, api.open-meteo.com | Your IP address; wttr.in guesses your city from it | Run omaros plugin disable omaros.weather |
| World clock in the top bar | api.open-meteo.com, geocoding-api.open-meteo.com | Your IP address and the cities you add | Run omaros plugin disable omaros.elsewhen |
| Update indicator in the top bar | pkgs.omaros.org, pkgs.omarchy.org, Arch mirrors | Your IP address, as any update check does | Run omaros plugin disable omaros.system-update; this is ordinary update checking |
| AI and developer command-line tools | Each tool's vendor, for updates every 4 hours | Your IP address, and whatever you send when you use them | Uninstall the tools you don't use |
| Web apps and shortcuts | Google, Meta, X, Zoom, Discord, OpenAI, xAI and others | Only when you open one | Remove them from the app launcher |
| Chromium, the default browser | Browsing-related data, under Google's own policy | Install another browser, or change Chromium's settings | |
| Network discovery (Avahi, printers) | Your local network only | Your computer's name and services, on your network | Run sudo systemctl disable --now avahi-daemon |
OmarOS accounts and OmarWeb Sync
An account at accounts.omaros.org is optional. OmarWeb uses it to sync bookmarks, passwords, history, open tabs and settings between your devices.
For each account the server stores:
- Your email address, used to sign in and to send confirmation codes.
- A password verifier derived from your password. The password itself never reaches us.
- The names and types of the browsers you connect.
- When the account and each device were created and last used.
- Your synced data, which OmarWeb encrypts on your device, with a key only you have, before it reaches us. We can see how much there is, not what it says.
No IP addresses are stored, and nothing is shared with anyone or used for anything but sync.
Delete your account and all synced data at any time from accounts.omaros.org/settings in OmarWeb. Unconfirmed accounts are deleted after 24 hours.
What it contacts only when you ask
omaros-upload-log and omaros-debug upload logs and system information to logs.omaros.org for support, kept for 24 hours. The installer's failure screen offers the same. Nothing is uploaded unless you pick that option.
Check for yourself
Watch what talks to the network for a few minutes with the desktop idle:
sudo ss -tunp state established # open connections and the process behind each
sudo nethogs # live bandwidth per process
